Privacy policy
How we would collect, use, disclose and protect personal information, written to the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles.
Demonstration site. Wattle Insurance is a fictional brand. This policy is written as a realistic example of what an Australian general insurer publishes. No personal information is collected, transmitted or stored by this website. The forms do not submit anywhere. Do not treat this document as a legal instrument.
Version 3.1. Effective 1 July 2026.
What this policy covers
This policy applies to Wattle General Insurance Pty Ltd, ABN 61 214 908 337, AFSL 244 019, and to everyone acting on our behalf. It explains what personal information we handle, why, who we give it to, how long we keep it, and what you can do about it.
What we collect
- Identity and contact details: name, date of birth, address, email and phone number.
- Property and vehicle details: address, construction, year built, registration, garaging.
- Risk information: claims history, prior insurance, and hazard data about your address.
- Financial information: payment details, and where relevant, information about financial hardship.
- Claim information: what happened, photographs, repairer quotes and assessor reports.
- Website information: pages visited and general location, collected in aggregate.
We collect sensitive information only where it is reasonably necessary and you have consented, for example health information relevant to a personal injury claim, or information you give us about experiencing family violence so that we can support you.
Why we collect it
To decide whether to offer you cover, to price it, to issue and administer your policy, to assess and pay claims, to detect and investigate fraud, to run our resilience programme, to meet our obligations under the Insurance Contracts Act, the Corporations Act, anti-money laundering law and the General Insurance Code of Practice, and to improve what we do.
You do not have to give us everything we ask for. If you do not, we may not be able to offer you cover, or to assess a claim properly.
Your duty to take reasonable care
When you apply for or renew a consumer insurance contract you must take reasonable care not to make a misrepresentation to us. That means answering our questions honestly and to the best of your knowledge. If you do not, we may reduce a claim, refuse it, or cancel the policy. This duty replaced the older duty of disclosure for consumer contracts in 2021, and it is set out in full in the PDS.
Who we disclose it to
- Assessors, loss adjusters, investigators, builders and repairers working on your claim.
- Reinsurers, who carry part of the risk on our book.
- The Insurance Reference Service and similar industry databases used to prevent fraud.
- Our IT, payment and mail service providers, bound by contract to protect it.
- Regulators and courts where we are required by law to disclose.
- Anyone you have authorised to act for you, including a broker, adviser or family member.
Some of our service providers store data outside Australia, principally in New Zealand and Singapore. Where they do, we take reasonable steps to ensure they handle it consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles.
How long we keep it
Policy and claim records are kept for seven years after the policy ends or the claim closes, which is what the Corporations Act and our own audit obligations require. Quote data that does not become a policy is deleted after ninety days. Website analytics are aggregated after twenty six months.
Access, correction and complaints
You can ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct it if it is wrong. Write to the Privacy Officer at Level 6, 288 Edward Street, Brisbane QLD 4000, or email [email protected]. We respond within thirty days and we do not charge for access.
If you are unhappy with how we handled your information, complain to us first through our internal dispute resolution process, described on the contact page. If you are still unhappy you can go to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au or on 1300 363 992, and for insurance matters, to the Australian Financial Complaints Authority on 1800 931 678.
Cookies
A real Wattle site would use a small number of first-party cookies to keep you logged in and to remember a quote in progress, and aggregate analytics with IP anonymisation. This demonstration site sets no cookies at all and loads no third-party scripts.
