Farm & small business

Two packs built from sections you turn on and off. Insure the shed without insuring the crop, or the fit-out without the building. Nothing bundled that you did not ask for.

The farm pack, section by section

Priced per section, so a client running 640 hectares of dryland cropping and a client running forty head on a lifestyle block do not pay the same shape of premium.

  • Homestead and staff housing

The house you live in, the quarters, and everything a home policy would cover, at rural rebuild costs rather than suburban ones.

  • Sheds, silos, yards and fencing

Machinery sheds, hay sheds, silos, cattle yards and boundary fencing, insured per structure so a fire in one shed does not eat the whole sum insured.

  • Farm machinery and implements

Headers, tractors, spray rigs, augers and the ute. Covered in the shed, in the paddock and in transit between blocks.

  • Crop and hay

Fire and hail on standing crop, and fire on hay in the stack or in the shed. Not drought, and we will not pretend otherwise.

  • Livestock

Death by fire, lightning strike, flood and accidental electrocution, plus theft where a police report is made.

  • Farm liability

To $20 million, covering trespassers, contractors, agistment, roadside stock and produce liability on what you sell at the gate.

The small business pack, section by section

For trades, cafes, shopfronts, workshops and anyone who has been asked for a certificate of currency and did not have one.

  • Premises, fit-out and glass

Your building if you own it, your fit-out if you lease, and shopfront glass including the signage on it.

  • Stock and goods in transit

Stock at the premises, stock in a van, and stock at a market or a trade stand for up to 30 days.

  • Business interruption

Gross profit and increased cost of working while you are shut, for an indemnity period of 12, 18 or 24 months.

  • Tools and portable equipment

Specified items anywhere in Australia, including out of a locked vehicle where there is forced entry.

  • Public and products liability

To $20 million, with the certificate of currency your principal contractors will ask for, issued the same day.

  • Money and employee dishonesty

Cash on the premises, in transit and in a night safe, plus theft by an employee where it is reported.

We do not sell drought cover. No Australian general insurer does, and an insurer that implies otherwise is selling you something else.

What the pack responds to

General insurance answers sudden and accidental events. Everything below follows from that one sentence.

Insured events across the pack

Covered

  • Fire and bushfire, including a fire that starts on a neighbouring property
  • Storm, hail, rainwater and named cyclone, after the 48 hour cyclone waiting period
  • Flood on the homestead, sheds and stock, after the 72 hour waiting period
  • Impact by vehicles, machinery, falling trees and livestock
  • Theft with forced entry, and theft of livestock reported to police
  • Accidental damage to specified machinery, in the shed and in the paddock
  • Breakdown of refrigeration and the stock spoilage that follows

Not covered

  • Drought, and any loss caused by lack of rain rather than by a sudden event
  • Disease, parasites, and losses under a state or federal biosecurity order
  • Erosion, subsidence and gradual soil movement
  • Machinery breakdown from wear, and the cost of the part that failed
  • Crop loss from frost, wind or poor yield, which is a multi-peril product we do not write
  • Losses while a shed has been left unsecured or a gate deliberately left open

Straight answers about a farm pack

Do you cover drought?
No, and no general insurer in Australia covers drought under a farm pack. Drought is a gradual event, and general insurance responds to sudden and accidental ones. What we do cover is the fire risk drought creates, the fodder and hay you have bought in and stacked, and the machinery you are running harder because the season is bad. For income protection against a dry year, look at multi-peril crop insurance or the Farm Management Deposits scheme, neither of which we sell.
Can one pack cover the farm and the business we run off it?
Usually yes. A cellar door, a farm stay, a roadside stall or a contracting business run from the property can be endorsed onto the farm pack, with its own liability and stock sections, so long as we know the turnover and the public exposure. Where the business is genuinely separate, a standalone business pack with its own certificate of currency is cleaner, particularly if a principal contractor needs to be named.
How fast can I get a certificate of currency?
Same business day for an existing policy, and usually within an hour during Brisbane office hours. You can also generate it yourself from your account. Principal contractors and shopping centre managers ask for these constantly and a slow insurer costs you work.
What is the excess on a farm pack?
Each section carries its own excess and they are printed separately on your certificate: typically $1,000 on buildings, $1,000 on machinery, $500 on liability and a higher excess on crop and livestock. Where one event triggers several sections, you pay the highest single excess that applies, not one per section.

Packs are quoted by a person, not a form
